Bacteria Kills Mosquitoes
July 2nd, 2007 by Jason Do you like mosquitoes? I personally and or loathe detest them, however, they are a part of the food chain. Mosquitoes are pests to humans. They suck or blood, buzz in our ear, and make us itch wherever they bite us.
In recent years the threat of deadly diseases such as the West Nile Virus being able to be transfered via mosquito has made their nuisance or a presence deadly. It is because of this that scientists have been struggling for some way to control their population without using chemicals.
Researchers have discovered a way. In some areas of the United States are using a naturally-occuring soil bacteria by the name of Bacillus Sphaericus to try and control the larvae of mosquitoes. when the larvae eat this bacteria in the early stages of their growth, it prevents them from eating thereafter. This obviously leads to death.
This cycle can last up to a month and darastically alter the mosquito breeding season. Already in Washington State, there is a utility company which plans on using the bacteria in all of its basin drains.
With a little luck, hopefully this naturally occouring bacteria will prove to be a great way to combat their ever-annoying presence. One thing is certain though… mosquitoes suck!!!
