President Obama Marks a New Era of Greener Thinking

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Greener Thinking was founded to try to help find a way to make “going green” more than just a cult with geek like savy. We knew that going green is more than just having a few people who were looking for a challenge. Going green needs to be more of a requirement. It needs to be fashionable and easily accessible and envied. We knew that it would not be too long because there were so many things coming together all at once.

Yesterday I went to the Detroit Auto Show and saw some really cool things that I believe people will want and not because its green but, because its cool. Many people will want the Chevy Volt because it will save them gas money and all the cool gadgets included in the package. That is what green needs to mean. That people will buy a green product because it is BETTER than other products not ONLY because it is green.

Barack Obama looks as though he understands these challenges and would like to increase the perceived value of green products and invest in making them more viable to increase demand. This will eventually make people opt for an electric car, not because gas cars are dirty, but because electric cars perform better and you will never again have to stop at those “Old Fashion Gas Stations.”

Congratulations Barack Obama.

Help lead us to Greener Thinking.

Presidential Hopeful Barack Obama and the Environment

Sunday, April 20th, 2008
Obama says to reduce carbon emissions 80% below 1990 levels by 2050 he will create a “Cap-and-Trade” system that means that you will be able to purchase credits to offset your carbon footprint. The money made off of these credits will be used to invest in creating green alternatives. These new alternatives will need skilled workers to pull them off and some of the money will also go to job training to help support this task. Part of this proposal is to give incentives to people who actively plant and support forests.

Obama also wants to invest in clean energy, he proposes investing $150 billion over the next 10 years. He says this will speed up the creation of plug-in hybrids and make renewable energy cheaper to generate and distribute. He would also like to require 25% of the energy we use by 2025 to be renewable.

One of the biggest points that Obama has pointed out is oil independence. He would like us to reduce our oil consumption 35% by 2030 which he says should remove the need to import oil from OPEC nations. To do this he says that we will double fuel economy standards by creating tax credits for domestic auto manufacturers to also increase the domestic job market in the United States.

Obama has clearly laid out his energy efficiency and environmental plans. Above is a summary of some of the main points, but on his website there is a comprehensive layout of his ideas along with links to his related speech’s.

The Future of Energy

Monday, December 3rd, 2007
Many people are very excited about future energy sources and our transition to get away from fossil fuels. It seems like almost every day you hear about a new advancement in alternative energy or some new initiative or incentive to use more environmentally-friendly energy sources. Everyone seems to think that potential uses for many of these energies are right around the corner. Everyone that is, except for the federal government. In recent projections, the Department of Energy suggests that there will be very little growth in alternative energy over the next 23 years. In fact, they project that solar power will still only make up .1 percent of all US energy. So, where will all of the necessary energy come from in 2030 when we will obviously have even more demand than we do now? According to the projections, the same place most of our energy comes from now… coal. The projections show energy from coal growing tremendously over the next two decades, while the non-fossil fuels show slow growth. Is this a realistic look at the future and where we will get our energy? Are our visions of alternative energy sources nothing more than a mere fantasy? Or is this just another example of the government’s poor ability to get with the times and see where science and technology are headed? The technology seems to be getting closer and the demand by people for these energy sources is already here. I for one, believe that these projections will proven to be very short-sighted by the Department of Energy.

NYSE & CDC Launch New Carbon Exchange

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007
As early as 2008, the operator of the New York Stock Exchange called Euronext and the French bank called Caisse des Depots (CDC) has announced plans to launch a trading market dealing strictly with carbon.

As of late, the larger exchanges within the United States have been keeping their eye on the global carbon trading market. The reason being? It is expected to double in size by 2012! The main reason for this is because governments and industry are continuing to step up their efforts to reduce pollution. To put things in a monetary perspective, in the year 2006 the market for trading carbon emissions reached 32 billion dollars; by next year it will most likely hit 40 billion.

Basically, this new market will allow the trading and settlement of carbon dioxide credits and allowances to be bought and sold like any other commodity. Though this explanation is somewhat unspecific, more details are supposed to be announced next month. Analysts are hoping that this new market will help to set an example and inspire other such green markets to begin springing up in the near future.

Greenland and the Inconvenient Ruling

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

Once upon a time there was a planet in a galaxy far far away. This planet had many residents through out its lifetime. Some of these residents were kind to the planet and it made the planet happy. These residents were called “birds” and “animals”. There were also some residents who had learned if you burned things it gave off energy. With this newly discovered power these residents expanded quickly and desecrated the forests with new “Civilizations.” These residents were called “humans” and the planet they called home was “Earth”… Wait, that’s us! Oh, wait, that’s us…

There has been quite a bit of new information coming out in the last couple of days about Greenland and its glaciers. Most of it does not look good. Some have even stated things that you really do not want to hear such as “It is too late already.” Not very promising when you are trying to fight a battle against pollution and at the same time trying to supply more energy to more and more people. Greenland’s glaciers have been receding at an increasing rate. Some of the predictions made by scientists for the next hundred or more years have already come about.

But as always there is an opposite side of the story. In Britain a judge has taken it upon himself to judge fact from fiction with Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” and predict the future. According to the British Times “This is distinctly alarmist and part of Mr Gore’s ”wake-up call“. It was common ground that if Greenland melted it would release this amount of water – “but only after, and over, millennia.”

So between these newfound facts New York and Florida will disappear in the next couple of years or a few millennia. Me personally I would rather try to stop it in the next couple of years and later find that it was unfounded instead of a few million people losing their homes.

Earth’s Temperature Problem

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007
If you’ve ever picked up a National Geographic magazine you may have noticed that many of the issues come with detailed maps inside. These maps are of professional quality and often contain more information than just the map itself. If you haven’t, then I strongly urge you to pick up a copy from your local bookstore or library. They are full of great articles on world events and often show how people are living in their own environments.

Recently, I looked at the October 2007 issue, which has a great article on growing food for fuel, and reviewed its map. The map is about our changing climate and contained some very interesting and scary facts.

Basically, todays surface temperatures are on the rise in an extreme way. These new temperatures are only expected to heighten and will continue to do so for at least the next couple hundred years! Now there is a role of nature here… natural cycles of temperature do occur on the Earth. They are the result of variations in the Earth’s orbit which effect the amount of Sunlight we receive for warming. The problem is, this extreme change is gradual and natural and what we are experiencing right now is the same natural cycle being increased by the catalyst of human activity.

When we burn fossil fuels like coal, gas, oil, etc., we overwhelm the atmosphere with carbon-dioxide. The problem with carbon-dioxide is that it traps heat. So far, this has caused a one degree fahrenheit (0.6 degrees celsius) spike in the average global temperature this past century. Most of this has occured in the last 30 years. Already we have seen some severe impacts such as changing rain patterns, more severe storms, melting glaciers, and a n increased sea level.

The bottom line is that unless CO2 emissions are cut or eliminated, we are headed down a path that will change our world drastically, and probably not in a way which is beneficial to us! What we can do in the mean time is try to stay informed, try to burn less CO2 producing fuels like all fossil fuels, and push for newer, cleaner forms of energy. Greenerthinking.com will do its best to keep its readers informed in the years to come.

Bush – UN + ½Environment = Two Day Environmental Conference

Thursday, September 27th, 2007
When you think of great environmentalists, the first on your list is probably not George Bush. Well as of Wednesday Bush wanted to change everyone’s perspective with a two-day conference held this week. But it seems that his conference may have been no more than to do just that, change your “perspective” and nothing else. Some peoplesay that this is merely an attempt to take the publicity of the United Nations conference that happened this week also. Al Gore has even taken a stance on Bush’s new conference saying that Bush should take more of a stand and make some strict regulations to cut down on carbon emissions.

The goal of this two-day meeting was to create goals, but not regulations. But according to the Treasury Secretary, Bush is taking this climate change meeting seriously, but this meeting is more to find a solution to global warming instead of trying to create regulations to reduce carbon output. It’s only a matter of time to see if any resolution coming from either the UN meeting or Bush’s meeting will actually accomplish anything. From current views of the Arctic Ocean Ice Cap it maybe during our lifetime that we will not have ice caps

The Simpson’s Exaggeration

Monday, September 24th, 2007

As always art imitates life… or is it the other way around? They come so close any more that it is hard to tell which came first. While watching the new “Simpson’s Movie” I realized that sometimes the best way to get a point across is to exaggerate it. Before you read any further, I would like disclose that this article may include spoilers if you have not seen the movie yet.

In the movie there were many warnings of destroying the planet. With one family and humor they were able to capture different angles of the debate on global warming. Lisa as always is trying to make the world a better place and represents the activists. She spends her time trying to educate people on the failure of their ways and how it will affect future generations. But that analogy is easy. In the movie Lisa warns Springfield if they don’t change their ways that they will destroy the environment. To this the residents just scoffed as if it did not concern them until Lisa stated that the water they had been drinking through the night was from their very polluted lake near by. This got their attention and helped them understand the immediacy of the problem. This is the exaggeration that I was speaking of. You cannot show someone an issue and have them respect it unless you can show them how it will directly affect them.

Homer is the ignorant (not stupid) everyday person that does not really have a preference as to what is right or wrong. He just does what is easiest. This category is probably the category that contains most of the population. These people do not really have any idea that things they do can affect the environment and as so destroy their environment without knowing it. Burning plastic cups in a bonfire, throwing garbage out the window while driving, and making 40 copies of a power point presentation instead of e-mailing it to the attendees. In “The Simpson’s Movie” Homer was sitting in line to have his hazardous waste to be taken care of properly, when he hears that there is a doughnut sale, instead of waiting he does the easy thing… well according to him it is easier… he drives through many pylons and a fence and throws his trash into the lake. This dumping is the final straw for the lake and starts the beginning of the end for Springfield. The government traps Springfield in a bubble because they are “the most polluted city in the world.” They are locked in the bubble so that they cannot spread their filth to the rest of the planet.

Don’t let your town get trapped in a bubble, find your own analogies and see how humor can help make a point of a very real problem go see the movie.

Live Earth (cont.)

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007
Well, the Live Earth concerts are over and from what I saw, seemed to be a relative success. I watched part of the event and it seemed not only entertaining, but also very informative. I was particularly impressed with a lot of the short films they showed during the television broadcast covering all sorts of subjects. Some gave suggestions on how viewers can make simple changes to their life that will have a positive impact on the environment. Some future consequences of what will happen if we do not make changes soon. Some even showed things to guilt people into doing things to help out the planet. All in all, I think they were well done and accomplished what they were meant to do. Another thing that I was impressed with involving the Live Earth event was their website. I think it was very well done and very interesting and informative. They have many tips and advice on things everyone can do to make a difference and also are encouraging visitors to the site to pledge to make changes in their lives to be part of the solution to the global warming crisis. So, get over to the Live Earth website and pledge to do your part! Only time will tell whether Live Earth truly has made an impact on the world, but I hope that it won’t be the last event of it’s kind aimed at helping our suffering planet.

Live Earth

Thursday, July 5th, 2007
A concert event unlike any other is coming to eight cities across the world in just a couple days. It is called Live Earth and its goal is to raise awareness about global warming and how everyone can do their part to help control it. There are a tremendous number of musicians lined up to take part in the event. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, The Police, Smashing Pumpkins, Madonna, Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, and Madonna, just to name a few are among those participating. The cities hosting the events are New York, London, Sydney, Tokyo, Shanghai, Johannesburg, Rio De Janeiro, and Hamburg (there will also technically be some sort of affiliated venture to Antarctica just to say that all seven continents are represented, but that doesn’t really count for anything). Former Vice President and Presidential candidate Al Gore is one of the men behind Live Earth. This, coming off the heels of his film An Inconvenient Truth about global warming is his next attempt at getting the word out to put an end to human causes of climate change. Despite this huge event and its attempt at doing something good for the planet, there are still some critics. Many people are saying that the travel alone involved with getting the artists to the locations and the concert-goers to the venues will cause such a negative impact on the environment that it makes the whole theme seem extremely hypocritical, not to mention the electricity used in putting on the shows. I can certainly see the point these critics make and I think that the organizers should do a little more practicing of what they preach, however I still think that the events will be important as a way of informing people about how important it is to get a hold of this situation as soon as possible and educating them on how they can do their part. You can catch the TV broadcast of the event on the Universal HD channel for 22 hours straight on Saturday, July 7th. I just hope that the average person has the intelligence to see it not as just a cool concert, but for what it is really about.
