Larry the Litterbug is a children’s book telling the story of Larry who learns to keep his home clean so his friends will stay and play. This book contains puzzles that allow children to use their imaginations and find items in the book.

At the MI Earth Day Fest we will also be demonstrating games for children that can be made from household recyclables. We will also have prizes for playing the recyclable games.

Introducing Larry the Litterbug!

Saturday, April 18th, 2009
LTLB-JPG

The creators of Greener Thinking would like to introduce our newest project to the world… Larry the Litterbug! Larry the Litterbug is a children’s book that was written and illustrated by the three of us here at Greener Thinking. LTLB is a story intended to teach kids about the dangers of polluting their environment. We feel that getting this message out to people at a young age is vital to making a difference to the overall outlook of our society. We are currently working on the final details of the book with our publisher, but expect it to be released next month. To see an advanced copy of the book, visit us at our exhibit at the Earth Day Expo in Rochester, MI April 18th and 19th.

Project Appleseed (Again!)

Monday, December 8th, 2008

For all of you who do not know, Project Appleseed is a project that we at Greener Thinking started as a test to see how well we could do on our own to help the environment. Many people would say we failed… but we are not ones who quit!

First we ordered some pines through the Arbor Day foundation but found that even though our site says we are green we found our thumbs were not. These pines took an ugly turn for the worse and soon were naked and without needle.

Next we tried to expand and start from the beginning while also keeping in touch with our original name for the project (Project Appleseed). So I planted two apple trees one was a Fuji and the other was a Gala. Everything seemed to go well. Until, one day I noticed that the Fuji did not approve of the love it was given and decided to lose all of its leaves. Luckily the Gala held strong and grew like a champ. Its now about eight inches tall and looking a little funny with its leaf placement.

Along the way I also started to grow a Pineapple… still has the word apple in it right? To do this I took off the top of a pineapple and planted it. This is growing pretty well too but, I don’t think it will ever make the transfer to the great outdoors. They aren’t really fans of Michigan winters.

This just proves that no matter how bad you are you can grow at least a couple of things. Below I have some pictures so you can see our progress.

Welcome to the New Look

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Hello everyone,
We have been working hard on a couple of new things. The first thing you may notice is that we now have a new look. This new look will help expose us to a wider audience and also reduce the amount of time that we spend working on the site. I mean, lets face it, we are Greener Thinking, we inform people about Green News and experiments that we have done (or are doing), we are not here to build websites. The less time we work on the way the page looks the more cool stuff you get to read.

So why have we not written anything in some time, you may ask.
Well thats a good question… but not an easy answer. We are addicted to the outdoors, and we also have day jobs. Did I mention we like the outdoors? Well, we spent a lot of time outside this summer and did not keep the site as updated as we would have liked but, we have also been working on something else during this break. I hope I can reveal more soon… but not right now.

Back to the outside thing! Since we had some time off hanging outside, we should have quite a bit of material to make some pretty cool articles. I traveled all over Michigan from south east lower Michigan to the Porcupine Mountains and back. I have some very cool pictures.

I also would like to do some updates to Project Appleseed. This is a project we started in celebration of Arbor Day. We had a couple of hiccups along the way. First off we bought some pines and they did not really appreciate the travel… and you can read more about what happened here and here.

Well please look around and explore. We now have a comments section to get everyone more involved, good or bad. Let us know.
Enjoy!

RSS Feeds

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

We have now been added to the world of RSS. If you would like to get our RSS Feed you can click on the orange Feed icon next to the “Greener Thinking” title. This new world of RSS will allow you to stay up-to-date on all of our great articles.

For those who don’t know what RSS is, I will tell you. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. Now you look at me and say, “…and…”. Well it gives you the ability, if you have an RSS reader such as the latest Internet Explorer, FireFox, Opera, or Safari web browsers, to automatically get updates when we post a new article. This will give you the ability to keep up on all the new things that can save you money or give you ideas on keeping pollution in check.

RSS Feeds were one of our biggest requests. You keep us going, and we want to keep you coming back therefore we will keep you happy.

Project Appleseed Update

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

It has been quite a while since I told you about our “Project Appleseed.” Well we ran into a little trouble. We ordered the pines on September 15th as promised, but our trees did not like us. We tried to plant them in a pot so that we could plant them in the ground later. Well they did not take to well to the pot… and I am afraid that they are no more.

We tried our hardest to keep them from death, but they did not take to well to CPR. I mean I do not even know where to breathe. On top of that every time you try to do chest compressions you just get pine needles in your hand. Not all that fun.

But as a side project I had been trying to create the actual namesake for “Project Appleseed.” I was working in secret to create some apple trees from scratch. Yep, I planted some seeds and now they are getting along pretty well. I started them out in the classic black plastic nine hole pot type thing that you get when you buy your flowers for your garden and now I transplanted them into real pots. Soon they will be able to hold their own and I will plant them outside. “Project Appleseed” will live on.

The two different apple trees that I have growing were planted from one Fuji seed and one Breburn. They were stubborn little seeds though. It took about 6 seeds to get two trees. I have been also trying to get some Concord Grape seeds to grow also with no luck.

So to clarify, we are still working on “Project Appleseed” but we had a minor setback and we will be continuing the project soon. I need to get the apple trees to a state that they will be all right on their own and also wait for the weather to get a little warmer. Michigan is pretty cold as of late, currently 23 degrees fahrenheit.
